LED screens are a trend nowadays. You can see them everywhere. But buying an LED screen isn’t that simple. Ask me. You will have to consider into account several things before buying one. One of these is the protection gears. Every electronic device comes with some protection features. The same is the case with LED screens.

Let me explain it in simple words. Customers want to know how safe and suitable their LED screen is. Every LED screen has an IP rating to measure its safety. It ensures that there is enough protection available for your display screen.

Now, a question must arise in your mind. What is the IP rating of an LED screen? Before going further into details, I will explain the IP rating briefly.

LED Screen IP

What does IP stand for?

IP is an acronym for “ingress protection” or an “international protection.” International Electromechanical Commission (IEC) has adopted this method. You can have an idea from its name. IP is an international standard of protection against any damage from foreign particles. It refers to protection against intrusions like dust and water.

IP code is a two-digit code system. The first number indicates the competency of the device against solid particles. The second will tell you about protecting against liquid intrusions, i.e., water and sprays.

If you want to buy a dust and water-resistant LED, you should be aware of its IP. You may come across many frauds. And indeed, you don’t want to misspend your money on a non-protected LED. IP rating assists you in differentiating between a well-protected and a vulnerable LED. IP ratings set the standard for the integrity and credibility of your device. IP provides the user with the necessary information. And it helps to decide how well a machine works.

What does the first digit stand for?

You may find IP65 or IP58 for LEDs. Don’t this code intrigue you? Has this code not made you think of it? Well, this code has something interesting. The first digit suggests the protection of the device against solid bodies. These include dust, wires, tools, and fingers. The first digit spans from 0 to 6. With IP6X, the device has the highest protection and security, and with IP0, none. Now, you will find the complete detail sequentially.

IP0 means no protection at all. IP1X provides protection against touch over the range of 50mm. IP2X introduces safety against objects over 12mm, i.e., finger protection. IP3X makes sure safety against wires and tools especially objects around 2.5 mm. IP4X comes up with a guard against screws, nails, and wires. IP5X provides an umbrella against some particles of dust that may not be enough to cause damage. While the one most of you are going to look for is IP6X. IP6X has total immunity against dust. The highest protection against any solid particle or dust mostly comes in IP6X. It is ideal for you to spend your money.

What does the second digit stand for?

Well, many devices come waterproof and water-resistant. But you want to know if it was originally waterproofed or not? This LED is sent for complete testing.

The terms waterproof and water-resistant sometimes confuse most users. It is common for water-resistant devices to prevail more in the market. But customers always want to look for waterproof LEDs. No such waterproof LEDs are available, as shown by the swindlers. Now you are thinking, how should we know if it is original or fake? Let’s get into it.

The second digit of the IP code tells you the protection against moisture or liquid contents. It comes up in the 0-8 range. IP00 indicates no resistance. IPX1 shows protection against condensation. IPX2, IPX3, and IPX4 have protection against water splashes at 15°, 60°, and at all angles, respectively. The following two come up with protection against low and high-pressure jets. IPX7 gives us information about the temporary cushioning of LED at a depth of 1m for up to half an hour. At the same time, the IPX8 layout protects from liquid more than 1m in depth. Keep in mind that IEC lays this out only for pure and fresh water.

Low IP rating VS High IP rating:

First, you should know for what motive you will buy it? Is it indoors or outdoors? Then, let’s jump up to the best LEDs for you.

High IP rating LEDs are ideal for outdoor display. But it doesn’t mean low IP rating LEDs are not worth buying. Most outdoor screens are prone to extreme weather conditions and dust. Thus high IP rating LEDs are ideal for this purpose. But if you want LEDs for your house, then LOW IP rating LEDs are best. Because your device is less exposed to harsh conditions, it is a cheaper option for both.

The perfect LED for outdoors has an IP68 rating or at least IP65.

Commonly sold IP rating LED screens and their differences:

You would find IP65, IP67 and IP68 LED in the market. Usually, you will go for the IP68. This is because all the LEDs have too many things in common except for one or two. So take a deep look into each of the LEDs.

IP65

Never submerged such LEDs in water. They are just resistant against water jets at all angles. Airborne particles cannot damage such LEDs. It can resist rain, dust, and other solid objects. You have seen screens around the road corners, malls, and car parking. These are none other than IP65 LEDs. Trying this is a good option.

IP67

LEDs with IP67 are more water-resistant. They also protect temporary submersion for at least 10 minutes. They are dust-protected. IP67 LEDs imply that they are better for outdoor purposes. It is because of the harsh weather conditions. LEDs with such code are immune to rain, dust, and water jets.

IP68

The best IP rating LED screen comes in the form of IP68. It is entirely dust resistant and waterproof. Others may have water resistance, but it is waterproof up to 3m depth. It can come with stand rainstorms. It would help if you were least worried about heavy downpours on LEDs. Most water-related mishaps are no problem for your LEDs. But remember that LEDs may get damaged if exposed to salty water. In such conditions, rinse your device with fresh water and quickly dry it. Avoid hot water too.

What IP rating will you need?

You have come to know a lot about IP coding and IP screen that are common? But does that answer the question above? Does that meet your thirst?

If you want LED screens indoors, or your environment is not harsh, the low IP rating is perfect. It is cheap. It’s available with much ease.

While if you are looking for outdoor use, then IP68 is ideal. It’s waterproof and could meet the needs of customers. I hope this makes your decision easier!
