You know, in the world of LED displays, there are a few terms that always pop up, and one of them is the “refresh rate.” I remember my early days when I was figuring out why some screens looked smooth while others seemed jittery. Later on, I knew it is all about the refresh rate. In this article, let’s dive into LED screen refresh rate and see how it can transform your LED display experience.

What is the LED Screen Refresh Rate?

First things first – what exactly is the LED screen refresh rate? To put it simply, the LED refresh rate is the number of times the LED screen refreshes the image per second. It’s usually measured in Hertz (Hz). So, when you hear someone talking about a “3840 Hz refresh rate” or “1920 Hz refresh rate,” you know what they mean. The higher the number, the smoother and more stable the image appears.

What is the Best Refresh Rate for LED Screens?

So, what’s the best LED display refresh rate? From my experience, a refresh rate of 1920 Hz is pretty good for most general applications like retail displays. But, when you want to get ultra-smooth visual experience, you need refresh rate like 3840 Hz or higher.

If your projects are outdoor advertising LED screens, you can choose the solution of 1920 Hz refresh rate. It is more cost-effective than higher refresh rate.

For 3840 Hz refresh rate, it is ideal to use in projects of rental events with live broadcast, indoor small pixel pitch LED display, 3D LED billboards, etc.

With the technology developing, now we can make the refresh rate to 7680 Hz. For this solution, it is perfect to use in the film shooting industry.

So far, we can conclude that 7680 Hz refresh rate is the best. However, you should choose the suitable refresh rate for your LED screen project. It doesn’t need to be 7680 Hz all the time, because the highest refresh rate comes with the highest price generally.

Advantages of Choosing High Refresh Rate LED Screens:

Why should you care about a high refresh rate for LED screens? Let me share some insights from my point of view:

  1. Reduced Flicker and Eye Strain: A higher refresh rate can reduce flicker, making it more comfortable for the eyes. Some of my clients have noticed that their audience engagement improved a lot just by upgrading to a 3840 Hz refresh rate LED screen.
  2. Smoother Motion Display: If you’ve ever watched a screen with video flicker, you know how unpleasant it can be. A higher refresh rate helps make movements on the screen smooth.
  3. Enhanced Visual Clarity: Whether it’s an LED wall for a concert or a digital menu board in a restaurant, clear visuals are important. Higher refresh rates keep the images sharp and clear, even in bright light.
  4. Better Camera Compatibility: This is something I didn’t realize until I took photos and videos during the testing of LED screens. The difference is obvious. When I captured on a 1920 Hz LED screen with my camera, there is much flicker. However, if it is a 3840 Hz screen, there is no this problem. We can see the higher refresh rate syncs better with camera shutter. Therefore, it reduces those annoying horizontal scan lines on videos.

How to Improve the LED Screen Refresh Rate?

To improve the LED refresh rate, you can try two main simple methods as below:

  1. Upgrade Hardware: Use high-quality driver ICs like ICN2153, MBI5252, or SM16169 that support higher refresh rates. This is the most direct method. Except for this, you can add more driver ICs to change the scan mode. This can improve refresh rates. However, this method is mainly relevant to the design of printed circuit board (PCB). The cost will be much higher.
  2. Optimize Software: Adopt advanced software like Novastar or Linsn to manage and optimize the refresh rate settings. For us, we always try to adjust the LED wall refresh rate through software settings during the testing. And we can get a balance between the refresh rate and other settings.

Conclusion:

The refresh rate of an LED screen might sound technical. However, once you understand it, you can’t ignore its importance.
