LED displays have become quite common in today’s world. This technology has vast applications. And we are yet to discover new ones. It has become a significant advertising device in the world.
The display screens are present in a wide range of shapes and sizes. In addition, more innovative and productive designs are now available. In this article, I will discuss calculating the LED screen size. But, first, we will see how we can calculate the LED module.
LED module:
Before going into the calculation, keep two things in your mind:
1 inch = 0.0254 meters
1 foot = 0.3048 meters
You should know two parameters of the screen:
- Height of the screen
- Length of the screen
Knowing these parameters, you can calculate the LED module and cabinet.
Now, let us see the LED module. If you want to calculate the module quantity in length, the formula is:
= LED screen length ÷ LED module length
I will further explain it with an example. For example, the client provides the display screen length to be 4 m. And we are using the P3.91 type. Then, the LED module length will be 0.25 m (250mm). Then, using the above formula, we can calculate the module quantity in length as:
= Display screen length 4 m ÷ Module length 0.25 m
= 16 pcs
16 pcs is the module quantity in length.
Similarly, we can also calculate the module quantity in height. The formula for this is:
= LED screen height ÷ LED module height
Now let us also understand this with an example. The client provides the height of the display screen to be 3 m. And we are using the same P3.91 type. The height of the LED module will be 0.25 m. Now, using the formula, we can calculate the module quantity in height as:
= Display screen height 3 m ÷ Module height 0.25 m
= 12 pcs
LED cabinet:
Now, let us see the LED cabinet quantity in length and height. If we want to calculate the cabinet quantity in length, the formula is:
= LED module quantity in length in total ÷ LED module quantity in length in a cabinet
Similarly, if you want to calculate the cabinet quantity in height, the formula is:
= LED module quantity in height in total ÷ LED module quantity in height in a cabinet
You will further understand this with an example. For example, a client provides the length and height of the screen size. The length is 16.41 ft., and the height is 13.22 ft. Now, how will we calculate the cabinet quantities of this display screen?
We will see through the calculation step by step:
- First, we will convert the feet into meters. The length of the screen is 16.41 ft. As mentioned above,
1 foot = 0.3048 meters
16.41 feet = 5 meters
The height of the screen is 13.22 ft.
13.22 feet = 4 meters
Different models are present according to the demands of the clients. In theory, the lower the pixel pitch, the higher the screen cost per square meter.
- Next, we will determine the total number of LED screen modules. For this, we take the example of the P10 type. We know the LED module size for the P10 display screen is L 320 mm × H 160 mm. Convert the millimeters into meters.
1 mm = 0.001 meters
320 mm = 0.32 meters
160 mm = 0.16 meters
The LED module length will be 0.32 meters. And the height of the LED module will be 0.16 meters.
Now, we will calculate the LED module quantity in length and height. I have previously mentioned the formulas for both of these. For length, we have:
= LED screen length ÷ LED module length
= 5 meters ÷ 0.32 meters
= 15.6 pcs
We have to take an integer. We can adjust this according to the specific design of the cabinet we need. So we will take 15 pieces of LED module length in quantity.
For height, we have:
= LED screen height ÷ LED module height
= 4 meters ÷ 0.16 meters
= 25 pcs
We have 25 pieces of LED modules in height. Now, we have the module’s quantities in length and height. According to these parameters, we will work out the cabinet size. It will be L 960 mm × H 800 mm. It is a typical size for an outdoor cabinet.
- Next, we will determine the LED module quantities in each cabinet. But first, again, we will convert the millimeters into meters.
1 mm = 0.001 meters
960 mm = 0.96 meters
800 mm = 0.80 meters
LED module quantity in each cabinet in length = 0.96 m ÷ 0.32 = 3 pcs
LED module quantity in each cabinet in height = 0.80 m ÷ 0.16 = 5 pcs
- Finally, we come to the final step of our calculations. We can get the cabinet quantities for the display screen from the above information.
For cabinet quantity in length, we have the formula:
= LED module quantity in length in total ÷ LED module quantity in length in a cabinet
= 15 pcs ÷ 3 pcs
= 5 pcs
For cabinet quantity in height, we have the formula:
= LED module quantity in height in total ÷ LED module quantity in height in a cabinet
= 25 pcs ÷ 5 pcs
= 5 pcs
We have calculated the length and height of the cabinet in quantities. So the cabinet quantity in length is 5 pcs. And the cabinet quantity in height is also 5 pcs.
- From the above information, we can get the total area of the screen exactly. Before this, we need to calculate the LED screen length and height. The formula for LED screen length is:
= LED module length × LED module quantity in length in total
= 0.32 m × 15 pcs
= 4.8 m
And we can conclude the LED screen height in the same way:
= LED module height × LED module quantity in height in total
= 0.16 m × 25 pcs
= 4 m
So, the total area of screen size = LED screen length × LED screen height
= 4.8 m × 4 m
= 19.2 square meters
Besides, we can calculate the total screen size according to the cabinet. The length is 0.96 m × 5 pcs = 4.8 m, and the height is 0.80 × 5 pcs = 4 m.
The length of a standard cabinet should not generally exceed 1280 mm. It depends on the module size. I will present the typical dimensions of different types:
- Typically, we have a cabinet size of 960 mm × 960 mm for fixed outdoor displays. This cabinet size applies to P4, P5, P8, and P10 types. Their LED module size is L 320 mm × H 160 mm.
- The cabinet size can also be 960 mm × 960 mm for the P6 type. Its LED module size of 192 mm × 192 mm.
- There are two module sizes present for P4 and P8 types. As discussed above, one module size is L 320 mm × H 160 mm. It is the most widely used size. And with this size, the cabinet size will be 960 mm × 960 mm. The other module size of these two types is L 256 mm × H 128 mm. And with this size, the cabinet size is generally 1024 mm × 1024 mm.
- For P2.6, P2.9, P3.91, and P4.81 types, the cabinet size can be L 500 mm × H 500 mm or L 500 mm × H 1000 mm.
The number of pixels:
We can also determine the number of pixels per square meter on LED screens. For this, we have the formula:
Pixels per square meter = 1000 ÷ square number of pixel pitch × 1000
You can get an idea by doing some calculations about this. For example, we have a P5 type display screen. The pixel pitch of this screen will be 5 mm. By using the formula, we have:
= 1000 ÷ (5×5) × 1000
= 40,000
There are 40,000 pixels per square meter on the P5 LED screen.
Resolution:
We can also determine the resolution of:
- LED module
- Cabinet
- Whole display screen
LED module resolution:
Now, we will see the calculation of the resolution one by one. For example, we have a P10 type of LED screen. The LED module size for this type of screen is L 320 mm × H 160 mm. Then, for LED module pixels in length, we have the formula:
Per module pixels in length = LED module length ÷ Pixel pitch
= 320 ÷ 10
= 32
Similarly, we will find the LED module pixels in height. The formula is:
Per module pixels in height = LED module height ÷ Pixel pitch
= 160 ÷ 10
= 16
Thus, we have the resolution of the P10 LED module. It is L 32 × H 16 dots.
Cabinet resolution:
We will continue with the previous example. The cabinet size for the P10 type of display screen is 960 mm × 800 mm. We can calculate the resolution of the cabinet in length by using the formula:
Per cabinet resolution in length = LED cabinet length ÷ Pixel pitch
= 960 ÷ 10
= 96
For the resolution of cabinet in height, we have the formula:
Per cabinet resolution in height = LED cabinet height ÷ Pixel pitch
= 800 ÷ 10
= 80
Thus, we have the resolution of the cabinet. It is 96 × 80 pixels.
Whole LED screen resolution:
We can get the full display screen resolution based on the LED module or cabinet.
We take a P10 screen, for example. The LED module quantity in the length of this screen will be 15 pcs. And the module quantity in height will be 25 pcs. With the module, the formula for screen resolution in length will be:
LED screen resolution in length = Module quantity in length × module pixels in length
= 15 × 32
= 480
The formula for screen resolution in height is:
LED screen resolution in height = Module quantity in height × module pixels in height
= 25 × 16
= 400
So the screen resolution will be L 480 × H 400 pixels.
Now, we can also calculate the screen resolution based on the cabinet. Each cabinet resolution is 96 × 80 pixels, and there are 5 × 5 pcs cabinets. The screen resolution in length will be:
= 96 × 5
= 480
The screen resolution in height will be:
= 80 × 5
= 400
So, you can see the same results for these two calculations.
Conclusion:
The client is like a ruler. Its experience is the most important. The display technology is advancing over time. The display screens are now available in various sizes and shapes. And it is due to the client’s demands.
The type of screen you want for your business can significantly impact its use. We may need different sizes and shapes of display screens.
